Floy Hawkins of St. Brigid Church will receive the Drum Major Award from the African American Catholic Center for Evangelization on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 8 a.m., at the Proud Bird Restaurant in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Hawkins is being honored at the Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast for her church and community service. She is an Educational Counselor at Los Angeles Southwest College and has served as Director of Religious Education (DRE) at St. Brigid.

At Southwest, Mrs. Hawkins helps students with their academic development, which includes learning skills, study habits, and various resources.  As DRE at St. Brigid, she developed a catechetical process for adult, and a Vocation Bible School for the spiritual growth of the youth.

Also, she formed a prayer group where parishioners engaged in praise, song and worship. They used the power of prayer to nourish their faith in a community environment.
