Governor Signs Bradford Bill on Insurance Diversity

Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 534, authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena). This bill expands current definitions in California’s Insurance Diversity Survey to include LGBT- and veteran-owned businesses. The bill also adds the Insurance Diversity Task Force and Governing Board Diversity Survey into California law ensuring valuable data will continue to be collected.

CLBC Members Kick Off MLK Celebration in The Capitol City

The event was held at the Sacramento Masonic Temple. The Rev. Al Sharpton gave the keynote address. ‘On Strike For Our Students’: LAUSD Teachers Send Message To Beutner With Historic March  

More than 50,000 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) teachers, parents, and United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) members marched in front of the district’s headquarters on Monday, January 14 on day one of the strike, with their picket signs and bullhorns in hand in the rain, as they chanted, “Show me what democracy looks like, this is what democracy looks like!”  

Governor Newsom Swears In New Board of Equalization Members 

Board of Equalization (BOE) Members Ted Gaines (1st District), Malia Cohen (2nd District), Antonio Vazquez (3rd district), and Mike Schaefer (4th District) were inaugurated on January 7, 2018, at the Stanley Mosk Library and Courts Building in Sacramento. Governor Gavin Newsom administered the oath of office to the four statewide constitutional officers, who were elected in November 2018. Member Cohen is the first African American woman and Member Vazquez is the first Latino to be elected to the BOE since its inception.
