Most of my life, I had real challenges with my father. He was absent, an alcoholic, and an abusive husband and father. I left home at sixteen. I lived a wild, wasteful life. I was very much the prodigal son.

My First Father’s Day: Redeeming a Legacy of Loss

Growing up, my family didn’t celebrate Father’s Day. My parents divorced, after nine years of marriage, when I was six-years old. My father was distant during the marriage, and he became even more estranged afterwards. When my father was convicted of murder and received a life sentence, it became solidified in my mind that I probably wouldn’t ever celebrate Father’s Day. My younger brother coped with this loss by giving his ‘arts and crafts’ Father’s Day gifts to mom. The Criminalization of Poverty: Cash Bail for Non-Violent Misdemeanors Perpetuates Unequal Treatment Under the Law

Our nation’s racially-discriminatory cash bail system has left hundreds of non-violent misdemeanor suspects to die in jail while awaiting trial, simply because they are poor. A 2015 study identified more than 800 deaths in local jails and lockups; more than 75% of those in local jails have not been convicted, and 70% of those awaiting trial are detained for non-violent offenses.
