Must see panel discussion surrounding Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-nominated documentary, “13th” which explores the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and America’s perilous transition from slavery to mass incaceration.

Panelists included filmmaker Ava DuVernay, rapper, social activist and business owner Nipsey Hussle, Black Lives Matter Co-Founder and educator Melina Abdullah, Los Angeles Police Commissioner Cynthia McClain-Hill, Esq., and award-winning civil rights attorney, host and moderator for the evening, Areva Martin.

Saluting the Greatness of Michelle Obama

One of Oprah Winfrey’s favorite sayings is “success is when preparation meets opportunity.” Over the last eight years, we’ve seen the living, breathing embodiment of that motto in our fabulous First Lady, Michelle Obama. Like a NBA baller who shines on the court, Michelle didn’t become the dynamic force we see today without a lot of training and hard work. Michelle prepared for the role of First Lady by first learning street smarts while growing up on the Southside of Chicago. She continued with an education at America’s best Ivy League Schools where she earned an undergraduate degree from Princeton, and a law degree from Harvard.

Saying Goodbye to the Obamas is hard to do

And while the Obamas may have used the office of the presidency to change the world, the pressures of the outside world didn’t change them. The Obamas stayed true to their selves, true to their roots. They may have lived in the Whitehouse but they kept their black identity —whether it was Barack going falsetto to sing Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together, or Michelle dancing to Uptown Funk on Ellen. Without a doubt, the Obamas brought soul to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Primary Roundtable added to Autism Conference

A special session was added to the groundbreaking Tools for Transformation conference hosted by the Special Needs Network, Inc. (SNN). The Presidential Primary Roundtable took place on Friday, April 8 at the California African American Museum. Areva Martin, SNN president, spoke about this year’s conference.
