We are just days away from a special election to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom. Voters around the state, including those of us here in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, are already returning our mail-in ballots.
We cannot talk about this Republican recall in isolation from the continuing history of vote and voter suppression
If you are not registered to vote, you can register online or by mail to receive a mail-in ballot until Aug. 30 at registertovote.ca.gov. You can also register the same day you vote in-person at a polling place or vote center on Tuesday, Sept.14. You can find more information on the requirements for registering to vote here.
Last week in support of the campaign to stop the recall of Gov. Gavin Newsom, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA-13) organized a ‘Black Leaders Press Conference.’ Ninety influential Black leaders in education, the church, politics, civil rights, and more – as well as members of the California Legislative Black Caucus — attended the meeting last Tuesday via Zoom.
On September 14, 2021 Californians are going to have a special election to vote if Governor Gavin Newsom should be recalled. A recall is a way the public can attempt to remove an elected public official from office before the end of their term of office. California is one of 20 states that allows voters to recall their governor.
As California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, I spent every day working with Gov. Gavin Newsom to make sure they are walking back into safe environments that shield them from COVID-19 exposure and afford them an opportunity to learn effectively in person.
In a word, we must honor our historical and ongoing role as a moral and social vanguard in this country and the world.
