Historian releases 2 new books in Black history series

Jeremy Houston, the founder of Miss-Lou Heritage Group and Tours, has recently released volumes four and five of his ongoing Black history series about people from Natchez.
In 2016, Houston first set out writing true stories about Black people from Natchez who accomplished great things in their lifetime, called “Straight Outta Natchez.”

Black innovators who reshaped American gardening, farming

The achievements of George Washington Carver, the 19th century scientist credited with hundreds of inventions, including 300 uses for peanuts, have landed him in American history textbooks. But many other agricultural practices, innovations and foods that traveled with enslaved people from West Africa _ or were developed by their descendants _ remain unsung, despite having revolutionized the way we eat, farm and garden. Among the medicinal and food staples introduced by the African diaspora were sorghum, millet, African rice, yams, black-eyed peas, watermelon, eggplant, okra, sesame and kola nut, whose extract was a main ingredient in the original Coca-Cola recipe.

Feminist Street Initiative Aims to Change Names of LA Streets

Biddy Mason and Dolores Huerta were trailblazers of their times. They are part of the Women’s March Foundation’s Feminist Street Initiative to rename streets across the nation after women who paved the way for equality and recognition throughout history.

Lura Daniels-Ball Elected President of Historic Our Authors Study Club, INC.

Los Angeles, CA (January 23, 2022) —The Our Authors Study Club, Inc of Los Angeles announced the election of the officers. Led by Lura Daniels-Ball, they will serve as the organization’s president for 2022. The full slate of officers includes Dr. Toni-Mokjaetji Humber as Vice President,  Haiba Payton-Franklin as Secretary, Paqueta Davis as Treasurer, and Ernestine Gordon as Historian. In December, the officers were sworn into their respective positions in a virtual program by Mike Davis, Los Angeles Commissioner of Public Works. Daniels-Ball is no stranger to the organization. She has been an avid supporter for more than 35 years.
