Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital recently announced the launch of the Know Your Basics Community Wellness Campaign on Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The six-month campaign will provide health screenings and enrollment events at 23 grocery stores, barber shops and beauty salons, farmers’ markets, shopping centers and senior centers throughout the South Los Angeles community.
The venues will provide health education, screenings and referral resources to educate the community about their health and assist residents with enrollment in health coverage programs. MLKCH’s goal is to empower community residents to take control of their health and wellness by being informed. Each event will include a health screening with measurement of blood glucose, blood pressure, height, weight and body mass index. In addition, there will be certified health insurance enrollers at each site to provide insurance enrollment and counseling services.
Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, states, “Knowing basic information about your health is a great start to understanding your risk factors and taking the right steps to stay healthy. Chronic diseases like diabetes, heart failure and even cancer impact our community at high rates, but they can be successfully managed with the right information and care. This campaign is part our mission to provide compassionate, high quality care and improve the health of our community.”
In addition to health screenings, MLKCH will provide a resource guide with information about the hospital, insurance options, and other community resources. Kick off events will take place at the following locations:
