History Professor Jonathan Chism Illuminates the Words of Dr. King in New Book

“30-Day Journey with Martin Luther King Jr.” (Fortress Press) is a concise collection of passages from King’s sermons, speeches, letters and other written works, paired with in-depth analysis by Chism, an assistant professor of history at the University of Houston-Downtown. It is part of a “30-Day” series – each book written by a different author – that includes other spiritual thinkers such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Dorothy Day.

After a childhood of family secrets and a lost heritage, Shonda Buchanan set out to find the truth about her Black and American Indian ancestors. Buchanan’s research begins in Kalamazoo, Michigan and takes her through Virginia and North Carolina, where she interviewed family members, read old family diaries, and studied public records.

Award-Winning Journalist Rochelle Riley to Discuss Her Book, ‘The Burden,’ at L.A. Central Library

This Saturday, July 27, author and journalist Rochelle Riley will visit the Los Angeles Central Library to discuss her 2018 book, “The Burden: African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery,” a poignant collection of essays on America’s unfinished business with the aftermath of Black enslavement. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Taper Auditorium, at 630 W. 5thStreet in Downtown Los Angeles. Riley will be joined by two of the essayists in her book, author and filmmaker Paula Madison and actress T’Keyah Crystal Keymáh.

Prince Memoir ‘The Beautiful Ones’ Coming Out in the Fall

NEW YORK (AP) — The memoir Prince was working on at the time of his death is coming out Oct. 29. Random House confirmed Monday to The Associated Press that “The Beautiful Ones” will combine a Prince unfinished manuscript with rare photos, scrapbooks and lyrics. First announced just weeks before his 2016 death, the 288-page book will include an introduction by Dan Piepenbring, whom Prince had chosen as a collaborator.
