Brookins-Kirkland Community AME Church will observe Pastor and Member Appreciation Sunday on Oct. 15 at 9 a.m., in the sanctuary located at 3719 W. Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles.
The Rev. Alvin Smith will be the guest preacher for the worship service, which will also include special presentations in recognition of the Rev. Dr. Mary S. Minor, BKCAME pastor since 2015, and several outstanding members. Following the service, a fellowship dinner will be held.
“The greater Los Angeles community is invited to join us for a spirit-filled time in the Lord and be uplifted by the powerful preaching of Rev. Smith,” said Dolores Bolton, who is serving as program co-chair along with Greg Robinson.

Smith, who recently retired after 40 years in the ministry, had headed parishes across the AME Church. He served as pastor at Bethel in Spokane, Washington; Olive Chapel in Kirkwood, Missouri; Allen Chapel in Kansas City, Missouri; St. Paul in San Bernardino, California; St. Paul in St. Louis, Missouri; Primm in Pomona, California; St. John in Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and St. James in San Antonio, Texas.
On the Connectional Church level, Smith served on the Episcopal Committee of the General Conference, the Preliminary Inquiry Committee, the AME Church Strategic Planning Committee, and chairperson of the Worship Committee for the 48th Session of the General Conference. Also, he has worked on several Annual Conference Committees including the Board of Examiners, Finance, Conference Trustees, and Ministerial Efficiency.
A native of Los Angeles, Smith graduated from Dorsey High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree at Azusa Pacific University. He also received his Master of Divinity Degree from Turner Seminary in the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia and completed course in the Doctor of Ministry program at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois.
Smith is also a U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of the U. S. Naval Chaplain’s Commander School. Commission as a lieutenant, his duty stations included Japan, Korea and California. After serving eight years as a U. S. Naval Reserve Chaplain, he received a special appointment to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.
