Ernest Wade Webb Sr., a long-time deacon at Messiah Baptist Church, passed way on November 19 following a long season of illness. He was 79 years old.
His celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, December 3, at 11a.m. at Messiah Baptist, 4500 West Adams Blvd., in Los Angeles. Pastor Perry J. Jones will officiate.
The viewing takes place on Friday, December 2, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home, 3875 Crenshaw Blvd., in Los Angeles.
Deacon Webb was born March 24, 1937. He was employed for 37 years with the Compton School District and served in a range of capacities including administrator at Dominguez, Compton and Caesar Chavez High Schools. “He was a role model for students and served as a father figure to many,” recalled his wife, Mrs. Katie Haire Webb.
Actively involved in his church and community, Webb served as chairman of the Deacon Board at Messiah Baptist, president of the Grambling State University Alumni Association, president of the Laymen Auxiliary of the Western Baptist State Convention and president of the Congress of Christian Education for the Los Angeles District Association. “He was known as a Christian Education Teacher par excellence,” said Mrs. Webb
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Ernest (Tyita) Wade Webb, Jr., of Houston, TX; daughter, Ernesha Webb (Sonwabo) Mazinyo of South Africa; three grandchildren, sister, Albertine Holmes of Houston, TX; sisters-in-law: Frances Reed of Los Angeles, Elouise Webb of Gretna, LA; and Susie Haire Mann of St Louis, MO; brothers-in-law: W.C. Holmes of Houston, TX, and Walter (Cynthia) Haire of Edwardsville, IL; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ernest Webb Scholarship Fund at Messiah Baptist Church.
