Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson personally delivered over 800 turkeys during the day on November 19 and in the evening, “flipped the switch” on tree lights on a 12-block stretch of South Broadway to launch the holiday season in the 8th Council District.
For the turkey giveaway, Harris-Dawson partnered with various community groups in South L.A. to identify residents in need, with a priority on families with children, seniors, veterans and homeless shelters in the district. He personally delivered 800 turkeys while organizations and churches throughout South L.A. picked up and delivered 200 turkeys throughout the weekend.
“I wanted to ensure that as families gather to celebrate the holidays, they are able to enjoy a meal together regardless of finances,” said Harris-Dawson. “The economic recovery has not fully arrived in South Los Angeles and working families deserve our support. I delivered turkeys at six locations throughout the district where I was able to have one-on-one conversations with constituents and neighbors were able to connect with each other in their own communities.”
For the lighting of holiday trees on Broadway, Harris-Dawson partnered with Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers – Local 11 to string lights on trees along the Broadway corridor from 93rd to 111th. A 30-foot holiday tree also illuminates the corner of 93rd and Broadway.
“Never before has the Broadway corridor in South L.A. had holiday lights,” said Harris-Dawson. “My goal is to build the kind of community that we deserve, one that represents the great residents of the 8th District. Holiday lights are one way to ensure that the communities of South L.A. glow as bright as its residents.”
The project included a cleanup of Broadway, the temporary extension of power to the median, installation of lights on the trees, and the installation of the 30-foot tree. Lighting of the median trees will continue through the New Year.
