For 20 years Dr. William King has practiced as a physician and has made it his duty to ensure his clinic W. D. King Health Care Group, provides the best health care services to people of color in the community.

The clinic is a community-based integrated medical practice in the Crenshaw area that focuses on primary care, internal medicine, pain management, mental health services and more. The facility also works with an acupuncturist and a Reiki Master, who practices the form of energy massage.

“We are trying to see ourselves as a full service clinic community-based center,” said Dr. William King. “We try to strengthen our collaboration with not only community based doctors, but also community based organizations.”
The clinic also takes pride in having services for the LGBTQ community, which can be a controversial group in health care.

“People want to go to a place where they feel welcomed,” said Dr. King. “I see access to the LGBTQ community as the same as access to anybody. I want to make sure there is a non-stigma environment that we have here. I don’t know everything. So if there are ways to make my office more LGBTQ friendly, I want to do that. I am very interested in groups that have been on the margin of healthcare.”

“We have a very strong LGBTQ community here and there are a lot of organizations that also focus on that as well. I see myself as an ally in trying to help out.”

The physicians’ passion for community involvement and medicine started at a young age.

“I have always been interested in medicine since I was 5 years old when my grandfather died of cancer,” said Dr. King. “Everybody in my family says at his funeral, I swore that I was going to become a doctor. I have always been interested in community events and community health as well too.”

As a resident of the Crenshaw area, and a product of the 60s, King saw firsthand how people of color and impoverished people were in implicit danger. During this time period, hospital and urgent care centers were being shut down. This led him to pursue a double degree in medicine and law from the University of Illinois.

“Part of the idea of community involvement is that we want to do community networking,” said King.

On October, 15, King was given the opportunity to do just that when he worked as the lead physician for the 11th Annual Taste of Soul Family Festival medical facility booth.

“We worked hard, I think we diverted a lot of problems that could have been worsened said Dr. King. “It was a well-run collaborative effort between the fire department, the paramedics and various community-based organizations and medical corporations. We had this contingency of collaborations and people who are invested in this community working very hard.”

Dr. King has already began setting future business plans for his clinic.

“We are going to start doing clinical trials as well and HIV,” said Dr. King. “I see the collaborations I have been building over the years solidifying into something that is beautiful with people who share my passion.”
