Fifty Schools in 37th District Qualify to Compete for a Portion of Nearly $416 Million California School Improvement Grant
Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced that nearly 50 schools in the 37th District qualify to compete for a portion of nearly $416 million awarded to California to improve schools through the School Improvement Grant (SIG) program.
“These Recovery Act funds will be a big boon to these nearly 50 schools from the Long Beach and Compton school districts, schools with unique needs that need a help hand to turn them around and make sure that all our schools are star schools,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “This is a crucial step forward in securing our future and I am confident that both the Compton and Long Beach school districts will be strong partners in helping these schools and the students who attend them to achieve their full potential.”
The $415,844,376 made available to California is being distributed by a formula to the state and will then be competed out by the state to the qualifying school districts. Based on the criteria for the grant, 30 schools in Long Beach Unified School District and 17 schools in Compton Unified School District qualify for SIG funding. Schools that receive SIG funds will be able to spend them immediately to improve schools for the school year beginning in the fall 2010.
“This is a wise investment in providing vital funding to support vulnerable students attending schools that may need a boost to help their students reach their goals,” Congresswoman Richardson added. “I look forward to watching the process as these Compton and Long Beach students are given the ability to reach their full potential.”
The following schools qualify for a portion of grant: Compton Unified School District candidates include Anderson Elementary, Bunche Middle, Cesar Chavez Continuation High, Compton Community Day High, Compton Community Day Middle, Compton High, Dickison Elementary, Enterprise Middle, Foster Elementary, Enterprise Middle, Frances Willard Elementary, Harriett Tubman High, Lincoln Elementary, Longfellow Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Roosevelt Middle, Thurgood Marshall; Long Beach Unified School District candidates include, Avalon K-12, Barton Elementary, Birney Elementary, Bixby Elementary, Burbank Elementary, Burcham, Butler (Mary), Chavez (Cesar) Elementary, Constellation Community Charter Middle, DeMille Middle, Franklin Classical Middle, Grant Elementary, Hamilton Middle, Jefferson Leadership Academies, Lincoln Elementary, Lindbergh Middle, Lindsey (Perry) Academy, MacArthur Elementary, Marshall Middle, McKinley Elementary, Monroe, New City, Powell (Colin L.) Academy for Success, Riley Elementary, Robinson (Jackie), Stephens Middle, Washington Middle, Webster Elementary, Willard Elementary; Los Angeles Unified School District schools located in Carson, Bonita Street Elementary, Broadacres Avenue Elementary, Dominguez Elementary and Glenn Hammond Curtiss Middle.
