Taste of Soul Media Day, held on Oct. 18, offers local news an opportunity to interview the founder, vendors and other key individuals associated with the 19th Annual Taste of Soul Family Festival.

Created and founded by Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. in 2005, celebration has grown to become a symbol of culture and pride in Los Angeles, attracting hundreds of thousands of people.

“The continuation of Taste of Soul is about love, peace, humility, and all the things that make up a very wholesome community,” said Bakewell.

Taste of Soul was created to showcase the vibrancy and potential within the African American community, focusing on its cuisine as a binding force for the family and the community.

“Economic impact is big and it’s important, but the other things that the Taste of Soul has done is it’s reinforced that we can do things in our own community,” added Bakewell.

The Taste of Soul Family Festival is for everyone, including the young, such as Lemonade Stands R Us, a charming venture by two young local “Kid Entrepreneurs,” who are already making a splash with their refreshing homemade lemonade.

This year’s festival will also feature a myriad of vendors such as K Michelle’s Kitchen Catering, known for their comforting soul food and Better than the Rest Gumbo. Also, California Love Pie Company and Hugh’s Hot Bowls are among the types of companies Bakewell urges the community to support.

The Taste of Soul is also a vital platform for civic engagement. “This Taste of Soul, make sure you register to vote,” Bakewell urged, emphasizing the importance of active participation in shaping the political landscape.
