The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in partnership with Crenshaw United Methodist Church will host a free Legal Aid Fair on Saturday, October 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
The event will be held at the church’s campus located at 3740 Don Felipe Dr., in Los Angeles. The Rev. Royce Porter Sr. is the host pastor and the Delta’s co-chairs are Alois Phillips, Evynn Davis and Winnie Young.
“The need for cultural competent alternative forms of legal services are necessary to meet the affordability and access challenges impacting our communities,” said Annette Mosley Gibson, chapter president. She also cited a recent article by Andrew M. Perlman where he noted that “more than 80 percent of people living below the poverty line and a majority of middle-income Americans receive no meaningful assistance when facing important civil legal issues, such as child custody, debt collection, eviction, and foreclosure.”
To address the issue, the L.A. Alumnae Chapter recruited a panel of legal scholars and speakers from the L.A. City Attorney’s Office, County District Attorney’s Office, L.A. Public Defender’s Office, Los Angeles County Child Support Services Division, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, and Langston Bar Association.
The panelists will discuss several topics including “California Crime Reform and Prosecutorial Discretion,” “Know Your Rights,” “Expungements (clients are requested to bring case number and information regarding conviction), “Child Support Enforcement,” “Estate Planning,” “Reverse Mortgages,” and “Restraining Orders.”
“We hope the community does not miss this important legal event and encourage all to attend,” said Gibson.
