Singer/songwriter James C. Birdsong Jr. continues to travel the country sharing his memoir, “The Best is Yet to Come: A Testimony of One Young Man’s Redemption.”
Last month, Birdsong made his national television debut on “Real Life,” the flagship program of Cornerstone Television Network (CTN) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the appearance was quite memorable for the young author, who overcame a developmental disability to succeed in life.
As shared in the Nov. 2017 L.A. Sentinel, Birdsong was born with a speech impediment, enrolled in special education classes and bullied throughout his youth. However, his strong belief in God inspired him to complete high school, graduate from college, and enroll in a Master’s degree program.
Through the interview on “Real Life,” Birdsong was able to share his story with CTN’s six million viewers with the aim of reassuring others to trust in God and follow their dreams.
“I really enjoyed my experience on the show,” he said. “I talked about how I could not speak until the age of three due to my speech impediment, God’s healing in my life and my calling of ministry. I also gave words of encouragement to young people nationwide that they can attain their potential.”
The son of a pastor, Birdsong has maintained a close relationship with Christ throughout his life. His parents raised him in the church and some of his relatives were ministers. His great-uncle, the Rev. Sidney Birdsong, was the pastor of Solid Rock Baptist Church in Los Angeles from 1959, until his passing in 1976. Also, his cousin, the Rev. DeWayne Birdsong, led Sunset Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
Birdsong is also blessed to have many notable family members such as singer Cindy Birdsong of the Supremes, multi-Grammy Award-winner organist/keyboardist Edwin Birdsong and former NBA All-Star Otis Birdsong.
“It’s a blessing to a part of this rich legacy of ministry and the entertainment arena,” said Birdsong, who is also involved in the gospel music industry and a big supporter of young people.
As for the future, Birdsong is working on his next book, which will focus on uplifting youth, and he’s establishing a foundation to provide arts education and leadership skills for youngsters. In addition, Birdsong is planning a benefit gospel concert and awards show in Los Angeles in May 2020.
“I believe that God has more in store for me,” said Birdsong, “and I am always thankful that He has allowed me to reach out and help others.”
