After four years of construction work on the Crenshaw/LAX Line’s three underground stations, work to restore and improve Crenshaw Boulevard could begin as early as June 15. The work will require three separate closures of parts of Crenshaw Boulevard between 48th Street and Exposition Boulevard.
The restoration process involves securing utility lines, removing the concrete decking that sits over each of the stations and then repaving the road. Metro’s contractor will also be rebuilding curbs, gutters, sidewalks and adding ramps that are compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
The closure schedule is:
Crenshaw Boulevard will be closed between 43rd Street/Homeland Drive and 48th Street for 43 days from as early as June 15 to late July for work around the Leimert Park Station.
Detours:
- Northbound: If traveling northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard turn east on Slauson Avenue, turn north on Western Avenue, turn west on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and turn north on Crenshaw Boulevard.
- Southbound: If traveling southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard, turn east on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, turn south on Western Avenue, turn west on Slauson Avenue and turn south on Crenshaw Boulevard.
Local northbound access to Crenshaw Boulevard businesses and residents will be available via Leimert Boulevard. Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall: local traffic to the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza will have access via Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Marlton Avenue, Santa Rosalia Drive and Stocker Street.
Crenshaw Boulevard will be closed from Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to Stocker Street for 23 days from late July to late August for work around the Martin Luther King Jr. Station.
Detours:
- Northbound: If traveling northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard turn east on Vernon Avenue, turn north on Western Avenue, turn west on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and turn north on Crenshaw Boulevard.
- Southbound: If southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard turn east on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, turn south on Western Avenue, turn west on Vernon Avenue and turn south on Crenshaw Boulevard.
Crenshaw Boulevard between Vernon Avenue and Stocker Street will be open only for local resident access.
Local traffic to the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza will have access via Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Marlton Avenue, Santa Rosalia Drive and Stocker Street.
Crenshaw Boulevard will be closed between Exposition Boulevard and Coliseum Street for 37 days from late August to early October for work on the Expo/Crenshaw Station. Motorist will have two detour options available.
Detour option 1:
Northbound: If traveling northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard turn east on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, turn north on Western Avenue, turn west on Jefferson Boulevard and turn north on Crenshaw Boulevard.
Southbound: If traveling southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard turn east on Jefferson Boulevard, turn south on Western Avenue, turn west on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and turn south on Crenshaw Boulevard.
Detour option 2:
Northbound: If traveling northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard turn west on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Rodeo Road, turn north on La Brea Avenue, turn east on Jefferson Boulevard and turn north on Crenshaw Boulevard.
Southbound: If traveling southbound on Crenshaw Boulevard turn west on Jefferson Boulevard, turn south on La Brea Avenue, turn east on Rodeo Road/Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and then turn south on Crenshaw Boulevard.
Southbound traffic will be detoured at Jefferson Boulevard.
Crenshaw Boulevard between Exposition and Jefferson boulevards will only be open for local access.
Traffic Control Officers
During the restoration work, Traffic Control Officers (TCO) will be deployed at critical intersections to help manage traffic along detours and local access routes.

The Crenshaw/LAX Line is an 8.5-mile light rail line that will include eight new stations to serve the Crenshaw, Inglewood and LAX communities. The $2.058-billion project is expected to open in 2019. A ninth station will be added after opening to connect the Crenshaw/LAX Line, Green Line and bus lines to the future LAX automated people mover.
