Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts will be among the honorees at the Quiet Champion Awards Luncheon and Fundraiser hosted by Holman Community Development Corporation on Friday, June 8, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, 506 S. Grand Ave., in Los Angeles.
Lawrence Frank, president of Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC), will also be recognized and Zenita Smith will receive the inaugural Rising Champion Award.
The Quiet Champion Award salutes individuals, families or businesses who quietly, but consistently, demonstrate a commitment to support communities, people and organizations that are underserved, and/or those organizations that provide services and support for the underserved and unrecognized.
As Holman CDC’s flagship fundraiser, the luncheon supports the non-profit’s mission and programs including the Jobs for Kids Youth Employment Program, the Job Readiness Training Institute and the Beyond the Battlefield Initiative in collaboration with Holman UMC.
Jobs For Kids is an employment and workforce development-training program that coordinates part-time employment for youth, ages 14-18, with local non-profits, private businesses, and public and governmental agencies.
The Job Readiness Training Institute, a 15-hour training prerequisite to employment, provides interview skills, resume writing, workplace ethics, sexual harassment prevention, financial literacy and job search techniques workshops. Now in its 15 year, Jobs for Kids has employed 556 youth and the Job Readiness Training Institute has educated 1,315 youth and young adults.
Established in 2003, the Holman CDC offers resources to develop human potential, spiritual, social and economic growth to result in expanding employment, educational, and housing opportunities for all people. In addition, the organization collaborates with Holman United Methodist Church in the Beyond the Battlefield Initiative. The effort supports women veterans in building resiliency, reintegration and reunification with their families and communities through the Women Veteran’s Empowerment Center, which serves an average of 35 women veterans annually.
