Compton Mayor Aja Brown was all smiles with a Compton family whose home received a facelift on Sat., May 20, as a part of Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County’s Neighborhood Pride Day. NHS Compton Neighborhood Pride Day was a collaboration between residents, block clubs, businesses, non-profits and volunteers who helped to revitalize a street in Compton. Volunteers helped to paint the exterior of homes, complete minor repairs, landscaping and more. NHS Compton Neighborhood Pride Day took place in 800 block of Northwood Avenue and helped to kick-off the grand opening of their Center for Sustainable Communities.

“Thank you to Neighborhood Housing Services and all of the volunteers that blessed this family,” said  Brown. “We are also thrilled to celebrate the grand opening of the Center for Sustainable Communities in Compton.  The Center will be a hub for growth, offering community health, workforce development, financial education, housing and green living programs to our local residents.

“I’ve watched the vision of Neighborhood Housing Services for this location become a reality thanks to the hard work and dedication of their team and the commitment of city staff. Not only will much needed services be accessible to Compton residents, but we’ve also removed 28,000 square feet of blight from our community.

“The Center is an important part of the new vision for Compton. A Compton that is both economically vibrant and truly sustainable.  Connecting employment, housing, business, and health is critical to building true sustainability and the Center will serve as a catalyst for revitalizing surrounding neighborhoods while delivering programs and services that create systemic, transformative change to the residents of Compton and throughout South Los Angeles County.”

NHS Center for Sustainable Communities is located at 1051 W. Rosecrans Avenue adjacent to Gonzales Park in Compton.  For more information, please call (424) 296-3521 or visit nhslacounty.org.
