Compton Pledge Delivers $1 Million to Residents

Launched in December 2020 with the support and administration of the Fund for Guaranteed Income (F4GI) and the Compton Community Development Corporation (CCDC), the Compton Pledge has already disbursed $1 million to support over 1770 recipients, including dependents. A total of $9.1 million will be distributed in recurring payments over the next two years. 

Mayor Aja Brown Launches “Compton Pledge” Guaranteed Income Initiative Residents to Receive Recurring, Direct Cash Payments

Compton Mayor Aja Brown announced The Compton Pledge, a landmark guaranteed income initiative that will distribute recurring, direct cash relief to approximately 800 low-income residents for two years, starting in late 2020. Among city-led guaranteed income initiatives in the United States, the Compton Pledge will be the largest pilot, and is intentionally designed to challenge the racial and economic injustice plaguing both welfare programs and economic systems. It plans to reach irregularly or informally employed residents, immigrants of varied legal status, and the formerly incarcerated.

Foot Locker and community activist and real estate developer Danny J. Bakewell, Sr have come together to open Footlockers latest store in Compton, but this is no ordinary store. This is designed to be a community driven store, a store reflective of the very community they are in and a store that is committed to making a difference.

Compton Mayor Aja Brown and City Council Call on the State for Investigation on Compton Sheriff’s Deputies

Call follows allegations of violent sheriff’s gang known as “The Executioners.” On Tuesday, Compton Mayor Aja Brown called on state Attorney General Xavier Becerra and the U.S. Justice Department to investigate whether deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Compton station have engaged in misconduct, excessive force, discriminatory policing and improper stops, searches or arrests. Compton Mayor Aja Brown, Originals Nation and Trap Heals founder Damon Turner all partnered together to host “ByeCOVID,” a local initiative event where they provided free COVID-19 testing to Compton residents along with care packages to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The event serviced over 1,000 people who registered or pre-registered. It was great vibes of live music, food, art, and a group of ambitious volunteers to serve the community. There couldn’t have been a more innovative way to host this event.

Ava DuVernay hosts screening of “A Wrinkle in Time” for Compton youth titled, “A Wrinkle in Compton”

Magic, adventure, and excitement filled the air at Dollarhide Community Center where over 300 local middle school students arrived to watch a private screening of the new Disney film, “A Wrinkle in Time.” The event titled “A Wrinkle in Compton,” was held in the City of Compton and hosted by the city’s very own Mayor Aja Brown and the film’s award-winning director Ava DuVernay.
