Dr. Eunice Elizabeth Nash, known affectionately to many as “Liz,” passed away on April 22. Her celebration of life service was held on May 6, at Forest Lawn in Cathedral City, California.
A native of Clanton, Alabama, Liz relocated to California in 1960. In 1961, she united in holy matrimony to Elvis Nash, Sr. To this union, a son, Elvis Nash, Jr., was born.
Liz earned a Bachelor and Master’s degree from the University of California Long Beach and a Doctor of Education from University of LaVerne where she was an adjunct professor of Educational Management. She served as the superintendent of Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SCROC) in Torrance until her retirement. Later, she became a member and president of the SCROC retirement organization.
An avid traveler, Liz toured the world visiting countries such as France, South Africa, Spain, Alaska, Canada, Jamaica, Portugal and Mexico. She often traveled with members of the Wonderful World of Widows and Friends (WOWW), an organization she founded in 2006 and served as president until her passing. WOWW II was formed in 2008.
Also, she was a Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) from 2015-2017. Liz was honored by the Torrance City Council and California State Assembly and received a U.S. Congress Certificate of Congressional Commendation for her invaluable service to the community.
According to a colleague, “Her friendship and leadership were gracious gifts. Liz bestowed so many of those on the many lives she touched.”
Her husband, Elvis Sr., and son, Elvis Jr., preceded Dr. Nash in death. Cherishing her memory are her sister, Mary Fitten of Altadena, California; brother, William Brown, of Birmingham, Alabama; aunts, Florence Aidoo and Ellen Jackson; brothers-in-law, Arthur Fitten and Billy Ray Nash; sisters-in-law, Judith Brown, Nancy Brown and Darlene Love; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, friends, colleagues and her devoted dog, Cherie, of 12 years.
