The California Highway Patrol Community Engagement and Recruitment Team (CERT) invited the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) to join them for a community partnership breakfast at Dorsey High School.
In an effort to improve and rebuild community relationships with the CHP, LAPD and LASP, a dedicated collection of 20 Law Enforcement Chiefs, Sergeants and Officers engaged in “human to human” conversations and cooked a pancake breakfast for Dorsey Law Magnet graduating seniors and Dorsey STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) Magnet freshmen.
The breakfast was a follow-up to a March Madness meeting with CHP CERT officers Camrin Servio and Lamar Keeble who spoke candidly with Dorsey students about their constitutional rights, civil rights, youth rights, Donald Trump/Jeff Sessions, stop and search, ICE and how we can join forces for a better community. Dorsey students were surprised and delighted about the large law enforcement support, “ It was a wonderful experience, to be honest, It’s nice to be able to sit and talk to the people who are here to serve and protect us,” stated Law Magnet student Robyn Taylor.
Congresswoman Karen Bass delivered a 21st Century civics lesson and informed students about how they can become more engaged in the political process. Pastor J Edgar Boyd of First AME Church blessed the successful and much needed event. The “Law Lives” themed partnership breakfast was sponsored by Daphne Bradford, Dorsey High School education consultant and White House Champion of Change.
“Dorsey’s Law Magnet Academy is a crown jewel in the South Los Angeles community,” said Bradford. “This is the place where we groom our future law enforcement officers, politicians and lawyers. Most importantly these students have the power to bring positive change to their community for the rest of the United States to follow.” Everyone in attendance enjoyed the breakfast “…the Community Engagement Team and I are grateful for the opportunity to build relationships with the individuals and communities we serve. We look forward to a long-term and productive partnership in the effort to mentor our youth and enhance community relations,” stated CHP Assistant Chief Mark Garrett.
