While talking to Oakley she gave a lot of gems on creating a bill so here are some that really stood out.

  1. Go to the California Legislative Information Website, leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, and see if there are any bills similar to your initiative.
  1. Research is key. Before creating a bill countless interviews and research must be done to prove that it will be effective.
  1. The bill has to be able to be funded. It is very important to check the numbers and make sure that it doesn’t cost the state more money than it has.
  1. Before sending your bill to your local councilmember, make sure to get input from people who have worked in legislation and the initiative that you are trying to get passed.
  1. Be patient because it is a long process for the bill to get to the governor
