Homelessness Spikes Up 12 Percent in L.A. County

    Homelessness in Los Angeles County spiked by 12% over the past year to reach an estimated 58,936 people, according to figures released today, with the region’s housing costs outpacing wages and forcing people onto the streets faster than authorities can find them shelter. But the Southern California reverend was not prepared when he opened a mailed envelope on Jan. 27 containing a news clipping with a picture of him preaching at “The Annex,” the outreach and evangelism center of St. Paul Baptist Church in Oxnard, where he is the pastor. The grotesque and racist language scrawled all over the news article shocked Huggins.
