‘A reset button’ — Black theater leaders push for change

Vanessa Williams, Billy Porter and Audra McDonald and other founding members of Black Theatre United have recorded the song and video “Stand for Change,” with all proceeds donated to social justice efforts. The friends recorded their song parts separately due to the pandemic in partnership with the Republic Records Action Committee.

After decades of relentless political indifference, reparations for slavery have finally arrived at the forefront of national American politics. Practically every 2020 Democratic presidential candidate has embraced the concept to some degree. Many of them attended Al Sharpton’s National Action Network convention in April and promised to sign H.R. 40 if elected president. However, many Black Americans remain concerned as to how substantial the candidates’ plans for reparations truly are. Are candidates making reparations a real priority, or has the term merely become the latest buzzword, guaranteed to garner applause on a debate stage?

Vanessa Williams Celebrates Daughter Jillian Hervey’s 30th Birthday

Last weekend, singer and actress Vanessa Williams threw a birthday party for her daughter Jillian Hervey, the lead singer of the R&B duo Lion Babe who turned 30 on June 19. The animal print-themed celebration took place at the Los Angeles Zoo and included party favorites from a festive buffet and drinks to customized 30th Birthday M&M’s with “Lion Babe” printed on them. Among the attendees were Hervey’s grandmother and her sister Sasha Fox. Supermodel turned mogul Kathy Ireland, who manages Williams, was also in attendance.   Imani Sumbi contributed to this story.
