Black Lines Matter: The Fight Over Redistricting Lines in Los Angeles

: Council Districts (CDs) 8, 9 and 10 saw minimal changes in the final draft map to be submitted to the Los Angeles City Council by the Redistricting Commission. The adopted draft map, which passed by a 15-6 vote, featured adjustments to the three CDs with the city’s highest numbers of voting age African Americans. Most notably, Exposition Park is now located in CD 8.

Arraignment Due for Former USC Dean in Ridley-Thomas Case

A former dean of the School of Social Work at USC is expected to be arraigned today on federal corruption charges in an alleged bribery scheme involving City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas that resulted in the university receiving lucrative county contracts.

Marilyn Louise Flynn, 83, is expected to plead not guilty via Zoom in Los Angeles federal court to charges that she conspired with Ridley-Thomas when he was a member of the Board of Supervisors. Flynn’s attorney, Vicki I. Podberesky, said her client “has not committed any crime, and we believe that the evidence in this case will ultimately support this conclusion.”

Two Parents Convicted in Boston of Bribing Kids’ Way Into USC

Two fathers were convicted today of paying bribes to get their kids into USC as athletic recruits in the first case to go to trial in the college admissions cheating scandal that ensnared elite universities across the country.

Former casino executive Gamal Aziz and former Staples Inc. executive John Wilson were found guilty in federal court in Boston after about 10 hours of jury deliberations, according to federal prosecutors.Aziz — a Las Vegas resident also known as Gamal Abdelaziz — was charged with paying $300,000 to get his daughter into USC as a basketball recruit even though she didn’t play on her high school’s varsity team.
