On Dec. 14, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter, in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Psi Lambda Chapter, hosted “Iconic Women in Space: Featuring NASA Astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps.”
Held at the Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter Sorority House, the event connected students, ages 11 to18, with the transformative power of STEAM education and mentorship.
Dr. Epps, a NASA astronaut and AKA member, delivered the keynote address drawing from her historic 235-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as a SpaceX Crew-8 Mission Specialist.
The event also highlighted the chapters’ youth initiatives. AKA’s Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) is a highly interactive leadership development program designed to empower and engage middle school students from ages 11 to13. APA’s Alpha Esquires program mentors middle and high school boys focusing on leadership development, academic excellence, and STEAM education.

Students from the wider community also participated in this opportunity to engage with a trailblazer in space exploration. The programs created a continuum of mentorship and support, preparing students to tackle challenges and seize opportunities.
“This event was more than a program—it was a movement to ignite the potential in our youth, showing them that the stars are not the limit; they are just the beginning,” said Katrina Carter-Journet, event organizer and YLI co-chair.
“Collaboration was the cornerstone of this event’s success,” said Chapter Basileus Cheryl Mason.
“Partnering with Beta Psi Lambda Chapter and their Alpha Esquires program expanded our reach and impact.”
Dr. Epps exemplified the essence of perseverance, courage, and brilliance. As a NASA astronaut selected in 2009, she completed rigorous training in International Space Station systems, spacewalks, and robotics.
During her 235-day mission aboard the ISS, she conducted groundbreaking research in stem cell modeling and studied the effects of spaceflight on human immunity. As one of the few African American women to achieve such milestones, Dr. Epps paved the way for underrepresented groups in space exploration.
“Dr. Epps’ journey was a testament to resilience and inspiration. Her presence, guidance, and insights helped students envision their place in space exploration and the broader universe of possibilities,” said Carter-Journet.
The event reflected the dedication and vision of committee members from both chapters. In addition to Mason and Carter-Journet, AKA Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter committee members included Tajarah Nicholson, YLI chair; Tracey Booker, Empower Our Families Committee chair; Angelle Brooks and Shirl Chambers, decorations coordinators; and Robbie Danzie, YLI mentor/coach.
APA Beta Psi Lambda Chapter committee members consisted of Landell Collins, chapter president; Jarell Richmond, Alpha Esquires chair; and De Shon Andrews, Alpha Esquires mentor.
“This event was the culmination of everything I value: representation, mentorship, and the belief that our youth can achieve extraordinary things when given the tools and inspiration to succeed,” said Carter-Journet.
“It was a moment I will cherish and one that left a lasting legacy in our community.”
Chartered in 1927, AKA Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter has maintained a long-standing commitment to uplifting the community and advancing the organization’s mission. With membership spanning generations, the chapter embraces addressing issues such as mental health, education, economic empowerment, and youth mentorship.
“Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter embodies vision and action,” Mason said.
“This event reflected who we are—committed to empowering our youth, uplifting our community, and honoring our sisterhood. Together, we soared to greater heights of service and created a legacy that inspires generations to come.”
She continued, “Seeing this event unfold has been one of the most fulfilling moments of my tenure as Basileus of Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter. This chapter has always embodied the principles of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® — sisterhood and service to all mankind — and this event was a shining example of those values in action,” noted Mason.
What made me most proud was how this event started as a visionary idea brought forth by member Katrina Carter-Journet earlier this year. To see her passion for aerospace and inspiring the next generation through STEAM education culminate in such a powerful program was truly special.”
