Is the FBI Underreporting the Surge in Hate Crimes?

“Anti-Black or African American” bias accounted for nearly half of all crimes motivated by race or ethnicity, which rose 18 percent according to the FBI data, while “Anti-American Indian or Alaska Native,” “Anti-Multiple Races, Group,” and “Anti-Hispanic or Latino” hate crimes all increased over 20 percent (251, 180, and 427 incidents, respectively).

Assemblymember Santiago and Senator Wiener Issue Statements on Net Neutrality

Assemblymember Miguel Santiago is issuing the following statement about Governor Jerry Brown’s signing of Senate Bill 822 a few hours ago:  “This measure ensures that we, in California, will maintain a free and open internet that doesn’t discriminate or price users or content differently. I applaud Governor Brown for leading the nation by signing the strongest net neutrality bill in the country,” said Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles). “California leads the fight against the Trump Administration agenda to destroy the internet as we know it.”

Black Wealth Still Plummeting, CRL Tells Lawmakers

For years, and particularly in recent months, major news outlets have heralded the nation’s robust economic recovery. From rising corporate profits, to lower unemployment, or rising stock prices on Wall Street, many consumers might conclude that financial stability not only returned after the Great Recession but continues to climb.

Children on the Front Lines

I am so proud of the Freedom Schools scholars who have learned they are following in the footsteps of children and youths who were the foot soldiers and infantry of the Civil Rights Movement. Some of their stories from the Movement are well known: six-year-old Ruby Bridges in New Orleans walked through White mobs to attend school—even praying for those jeering at her; the Little Rock Nine; the four little girls killed in the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. Thousands of children were on the frontlines of history. Whether sung or unsung heroes, we owe all of them a debt of gratitude.

Manafort Found Guilty, Cohen Pleads Guilty, Trump in Trouble

President Donald Trump says the conviction of his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort on financial crimes is “a disgrace.” But he is largely ignoring his former personal attorney Michael Cohen’s guilty pleas to felonies, including campaign finance violations he stated he carried out in coordination with Trump, other than to say he felt “badly for both” men. Source CNN Manafort was convicted Tuesday in Virginia on charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential obstruction of justice. Cohen pleaded guilty in New York, saying he and Trump arranged the payment

Mark Ruffalo and Common Call Trump Administration’s Failure to Reunify Families at the Border a “Humanitarian Crisis”

We Stand United released a new video featuring Mark Ruffalo and Common about the ongoing humanitarian crisis of family separation and abuses at the border. The Trump Administration failed to meet a court order to reunify families they separated at the border by July 26. Many families have not been brought back together. Children are still being kept in cages and abuses continue. The short video features distraught parents and children at the U.S. border, humanitarian workers describing the conditions they are facing, and also includes moving footage of a mother being reunited with her child.

Congress Must Stop Family Separation

Families come to this country seeking asylum. They undertake grueling, dangerous journeys in the hope that America will provide safe harbor from the violence that they are fleeing. Some are escaping domestic abuse, others have come to our shores to save their families from gangs. None expect to have their children ripped from their arms when they finally reach safety.

According to LAPD spokesperson Mike Lopez a suspicious package was delivered  to Congress member Maxine Waters’ district office located at 10124 S. Broadway. The office was evacuated after the item was found about 2:35 pm. The package was labeled “anthrax,” according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The L.A. Police Department and a hazardous materials (HazMat) crew removed the package, which was determined to not be dangerous, according to a notice from the Los Angeles Fire Department. “There was no evidence of any dangerous substance at all,” Lopez said. “They’re probably going to investigate to see where this item came from.” Waters is a
