As a community service non-profit and faith leader in Los Angeles, providing comfort and joy to our community members in need is the essence of my work. During the holiday season, that work is always more important.
During the civil rights phase of the Black Freedom Movement, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) chose as its motto: “To Save the Soul of America.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., SCLC’s principal theorist and social philosopher, explained that it was really to reaffirm that “America would never be free or saved from itself” until African Americans are freed “completely from the shackles they still wear.” He said it was a question of concern for the integrity and life of America. And as I read it, it is a question concerning the very life and death of the people of America, caught up, at that time, in a monstrously immoral war against the Vietnamese people and wasting lives and resources better spent on the well-being of the American people.
Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles and Southern CaliforniaLeaders of the Baptist Ministers Conference (BMC) of Los Angeles, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), National Action Network(NAN), Los Angeles and a coalition of community groups in South Los Angeles hosted a rally to oppose the proposal by CIM group to purchase the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall. This proposal adds no value to our community and we are formally launching our petition campaign against the CIM group.
Legendary basketball player Bill Russell is one of the most decorated athletes in the NBA in all sports. While having a successful career, he endured discrimination and racism, even in the town that he played for in Boston. Yet, Russell had no problem in fighting against racism and worked to be a vocal figure in the Civil Rights Movement.

Prominent American civil rights activist and Washington, D.C. politician Sterling Tucker passed away on July 14, in Washington, D.C. Tucker was the first chair of the District of Columbia City Council and ran for mayor in 1978. He was defeated by Marion Barry by 1,500 votes.

Fred Shuttlesworth, and James Bevel of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) along with other members of the SCLC set out to desegregate Birmingham through the use of non-violent acts like protests, marches, and boycotts.
