Lakers Re-sign Rajon Rondo

EL SEGUNDO – The Los Angeles Lakers have re-signed guard Rajon Rondo, it was announced today by General Manager Rob Pelinka. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. In 46 games (29 starts) last season, Rondo recorded 14 double-doubles and one triple-double, tallying 9.2 points, 8.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. The 13-year veteran has played in 825 career games (726 starts) for Boston, Dallas, Sacramento, Chicago, New Orleans and the Lakers, with averages of 10.4 points (.460 FG%), 8.5 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals.

Lakers’ Young Core Face Adversity in Veterans’ Absence

The Lakers’ young core consisting of Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, and Josh Hart have spent the last seven games being forced to play without their centerpiece LeBron James and veteran point guard Rajon Rondo. Over that span, the Lakers have gone 2-5 with their only wins coming over the Kings on Dec. 30 and the Mavericks on the road Monday, Jan. 7.

Lakers’ rookie Johnathan Williams made his NBA debut against the San Antonio Spurs as he introduced himself to the Staples Center crowd with a two-handed dunk on his first play of the game. After Lakers’ starting center JaVale McGee fouled out and Ivica Zubac found himself in foul trouble, Lakers’ coach Luke Walton called Williams’ number. Los Angeles Lakers fans poured into Staples Center ahead of the home opener against the Houston Rockets on Saturday, invigorated to usher in the new “Showtime” era with LeBron James as the star.   Lakers teammates Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul of the Rockets were suspended without pay Sunday for an on-court fight, with Paul taking the heaviest financial hit. Ingram was suspended four games, Rondo will sit out three games and Paul two games. The NBA handed down the punishments a day after the incident in the fourth quarter at Staples Center.
