Black Republican Opponent Expected to Defeat Stockton’s Popular Democratic Mayor Michael Tubbs

In 2012, Stockton, California, elected 22-year-old Michael Tubbs to his hometown’s city council.  From that celebrated victory, to his 2017 rise to mayor of the Central Valley city, media pundits and Democratic Party insiders have hailed Tubbs, calling him one of the Democratic Party’s rising stars. 

Tubbs’ future as a force in the Democratic party still remains almost certain, but on Nov. 3, the 30-year-old Stanford grad suffered an unexpected blow. As of Friday, Nov. 13, Tubbs was trailing Republican challenger, Kevin Lincoln in his reelection bid. 

Los Angeles Mayor Announces Progress Made Under Community Safety Partnership in LAPD; Captain Emada Tingirides Appointed Deputy Chief of CSP Bureau

Garcetti stressed the co-ownership of protection from both local legislation and the community they represent. He shared the progress of the Community Safety Partnership Bureau in the Los Angeles Police Department. “This bureau makes CSP both a program and a philosophy,” Mayor Garcetti stated. The program cultivated a set of procedures that hold the body of the organization accountable to maintaining a civil approach to policing.

Report: Companies Owned by Women of Color Account for 89 Percent of All New Women-Owned Businesses

The annual report, based on U.S. Census Bureau data adjusted by Gross Domestic Product data, found that women-owned businesses continue to trend above all others. Over the past five years, the number of women-owned businesses increased by 21 percent, while all enterprises increased by only 9 percent.

Cardinal To Sponsor Police K-9 Demo And Safety Fair

Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber, PhD Elected as Caucus Chair

The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Shirley N. Weber (AD 79) as the incoming Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus. Assemblymember Weber has been a champion for education and civil rights.  This year, Dr. Weber authored two Caucus priority bills Assembly Bill 2635 regarding properly funding underperforming students, and Assembly Bill 931 which seeks to improve public safety through changing law enforcement’s use of force policies.

L.A. County DA Focuses on Marijuana DUIs Through New Program

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office has already trained several hundred law enforcement personnel in handling marijuana DUI cases, via a program funded by an almost $900,000 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
