The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) recently completed a pilot program that mentored young men and women of color to reach their full potential, while also recruiting a new – and more diverse – generation of law enforcement professionals.

The 18th L.A. Focus’ First Ladies High Tea held recently at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills was a grand affair. Over 1,000 attendees were blessed to witness a star-studded event as the women wore their Sunday Best Hats to top it all off. L.A. YUNDAI PAYS TRIBUTE TO VETERAN CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY FRED GRAY AT NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION BOARD OF GOVERNOR’S RECEPTION

The National Bar Association Board of Governors, Hyundai Motor America, and The Law firm of Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt joined forces to honor legendary civil rights attorney Fred Gray at a special reception on Saturday, July 18, 2015. Held at the law offices of Ivie, McNeil and Wyatt, Hyundai executives, National Bar Association Board members, and high profile elected officials gathered to celebrate Gray, one of the nation’s most prominent civil rights leaders. The famed attorney, a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Law is well-respected and seen as an icon in the civil rights movement, having represented Rosa Parks in 1954 after her arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

A New Day at MLK

Chants of ‘a new day at MLK’ filled the air as thousands came together to celebrate the reopening of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital in Watts on Friday, Aug. 7.

The audience was full of California officials including Supervisor Mark Ridley – Thomas, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, California Attorney General Kamala Harris, California State Senator Isadore Hall, III, Congresswoman Janice Hahn, Assemblymember Sebastian Ridley – Thomas, Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson, Inglewood Mayor James Butts and Councilmember Curren Price to name a few. While the hospital has been opened since July 7, last Friday was a day used to celebrate everyone that made it possible.

L.A. County is known for having the best trauma care systems in the world, with South L.A. alone making up 20 percent of trauma related death with a mortality rate of 3.6 percent. With the reopening of King Community Hospital this summer, medical leaders have high hopes these numbers continue to decrease.

Board of Supervisors Vote for Improvement of Medical Services for Inmates

  Hoping to improve the medical services provided to jail inmates, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to shift the responsibility from the Sheriff’s Department to the Department of Health Services. The county currently allocates approximately $330 million and over 2,000 positions per year on health, mental health, and public health services to the roughly 17,500 inmates housed in county jails.  Of this amount, $238 million and more than 1,700 budgeted positions are allocated to the Sheriff’s Medical Services Bureau (MSB).  Los Angeles County is the only county in California in which the Sheriff’s Department runs its own
