On Thursday, November 24, Mothers In Action (MIA) and Ward EDC celebrated 27 years of service with sending Thanksgiving dinners out to the Greater Los Angeles area from Ward Villas Senior Complex.
The Los Angeles Urban League (LAUL) recently held its University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Assistant Program graduation ceremony. Eight students graduated from the program this year, which was a 400% increase from last year’s graduations.

Mothers In Action gave toys and gift cards to more than 450 young people in South L.A. through its Angel Tree Christmas Project. Also, three daycare facilities, several families and 100 homeless individuals received a range of much-needed supplies.
The Los Angeles Urban League and UCLA Medical Assistant Program are intentional on advocating and advancing health equality. The program’s goal is not only to graduate students to work in healthcare, but also to give them a voice to speak on behalf of patients, especially those who look like them. Diversity and advocacy are important and are part of the training the students receive in the program. The importance of MA 3 graduates to confidently speak on behalf of patients is one of the services they provide to the community. Many alumni from the program have gone on to do exciting things in healthcare.

Several South Los Angeles nonprofits and their top executives were recognized at the Los Angeles Business Journal’s annual Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards. The awards honor individual organizations and leaders whose focus is to improve the communities they serve. Finalists and winners and were recognized during the L.A. Business Journal virtual event in early May.
Achieving a century of progress is not easy, but the Los Angeles Urban League (LAUL) defied the odds by celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Founded in 1921, the heralded organization has made a huge impact for the last 10 decades by promoting business opportunities, training and development and coalition building on behalf of African Americans.
Right now, more than 600,000 people in our city are unemployed in the fallout from this pandemic. They are disproportionately women and people of color. As we help them get back to work, we have an opportunity to set our city down a more equitable path.
On Monday, August 31, 2020, two Los Angeles County Sherriff deputies shot and killed Dijon Kizzee, a 29-year-old African American man from Lancaster, CA, visiting friends and family in the Westmont neighborhood of Los Angeles. Shortly after Mr. Kizzee was pronounced dead, community activists gathered at the sight of the shooting. They marched to the local Sheriff’s station to protest the unnecessary murder of another Black man by those pledged to protect and serve. Protesters are rightfully outraged, and the family deserves answers and transparency.
