LA City Council OKs Changes to Proof-of-Vaccination Ordinance

The Los Angeles City Council today approved enforcement measures and modifications for its new law requiring Angelenos patronizing indoor restaurants, gyms, entertainment and recreational facilities, personal care establishments and some city buildings to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19. The law went into effect on Monday, but enforcement is not set to begin until Nov. 29. The City Council on Friday tweaked the ordinance, so it will now require proof of vaccinations for only individuals who are 12 years old and over, instead of all eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, which includes people over the age of 5. COVID Hospitalizations Continue Dropping in Los Angeles County

The number of coronavirus patients in Los Angeles County hospitals continues to fall, declining from 670 on Saturday to 656,
according to the latest data released by the state. The number of those patients in intensive care remained the same at 202. It was the 36th time in the past 41 days that the number of COVID patients in county hospitals declined, down from a summer peak of nearly 1,800 brought on by the more contagious Delta variant.

Los Angeles has the largest small business economy in the U.S., with over 250,000 small businesses.

However, there’s a shortage of capital available for these small businesses, and entrepreneurs of color are disproportionately affected.

Earlier this month, the Entrepreneurs of Color Fund (EOCF) program was launched in Los Angeles to address this shortage. With $2.65 million in funding to support historically disadvantaged small business owners in Los Angeles, the fund is designed to help increase the availability of capital and business resources to strengthen small businesses owned by underserved entrepreneurs.

Appeals Court Overturns Judge’s Order to House L.A. Skid Row Homeless

A federal appeals court today overturned a Los Angeles judge’s sweeping order forcing local government to offer shelter to every unhoused person on downtown’s Skid Row by the middle of next month, and sent the case back to the lower court for further proceedings. A panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals determined that the district court had “abused its discretion” because it did not have authority to issue the preliminary injunction order based on claims not pled in the complaint brought last year by the L.A. Alliance for Human Rights, an association of downtown residents, homeless individuals and property owners seeking to compel the county and city of Los Angeles to find shelter for the thousands of people camping on city sidewalks.

(File Photo) Los Angeles County is preparing a revised health order that will impose new COVID-19 vaccine mandates, requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for outdoor mega-events of 10,000 people or more, the public health director said today. Los Angeles County, has issued a recent warning that COVID-19 cases, and in particular the Delta variant, throughout the county are on the rise.   African Americans in particular are suffering the effects of the virus more than other communities at an alarming rate and are encouraged to get vaccinated. Dr. Elaine Batchlor, president and CEO of MLKCH said, “If you’ve been waiting to get your COVID vaccine, now is the time to stop waiting and do it.”
