Remembering Miss Edna Hortense Smith’s 100-Year-Old Legacy

Edna Hortense Smith was born in Chipley, Florida on September 21, 1921, and celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and friends in Hawthorn, CA, where she was a resident.  She was a teacher in Florida before moving to California, where she continued her career in education. Ms. Edna was a former graduate of Pepperdine University and was a special education teacher for LAUSD.  She was also a WATTS librarian and an income tax specialist. Ms. Edna had over 17 grandchildren. She was cared for by her grandchildren, Di Laudia and CDell Sims.  She loved to watch CNN news daily

Despite all the stresses, division, and crises of the past year, we Americans have the timely opportunity to achieve the togetherness and mutual benefits in the new year that can mark a significant turning point.  This opportunity lies within the recently passed $1.2 trillion brick-and-mortar infrastructure bill, which can help build bridges of inclusivity between mainstream construction industry businesses and small and diverse business enterprises, generate multiplicative community benefits, and serve as a replicable national model across many industries.

A woman was shot to death in Compton today. The shooting was reported about 1:55 p.m. in the 1400 block of West 155th Street, near Compton/Woodley Airport, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

`King Richard’ Wins the LA Press Club’s Veritas Award

“King Richard,” the Will Smith-starring film about the childhood rise of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams and the father who raised them for greatness, was named today the winner of the Los Angeles Press Club’s seventh annual Veritas Award.  The award recognizes the “best film based on or inspired by real events and people.” Films are judged “on fidelity of subject matter and artistic excellence,” according to the Press Club.
