God has abundantly blessed the ministry of the Rev. Dr. Rosalynn Kyle Brookins since she answered His call to preach 14 years ago. The wife of the late Bishop H.H. Brookins, she became the first retired AME episcopal supervisor to be appointed as a pastor in 2011 and in May 2018, she was the first female to earn a Doctor of Ministry degree from Payne Theological Seminary. Spiritual giant and champion for social justice are frequently used to describe the Right Rev. Cornal Garnett Henning, Sr. Known locally and internationally as a passionate religious leader and human rights advocate, Bishop Henning passed in Los Angeles on May 15. His celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, May 23, at 11 a.m., at First AME Church, 2270 S. Harvard Blvd. in Los Angeles. AME Lenten Caravan Donates to Nonprofits

Eight AME churches recently united to present the Community Lenten Caravan (CLC), a series of services held in L.A. and Pasadena leading up to Resurrection Sunday. The goals were spiritual renewal for believers and raising funds to assist two local nonprofits. School on Wheels of Los Angeles and Alkebulan Cultural Center of Pasadena received all of the proceeds from the CLC services. Fugh Leads AMEs in Donating Funds to Local Nonprofits

  Four local nonprofits received sizeable donations from the AME Church during last week’s Council of Bishops and General Board meeting at the Hilton LAX Hotel in Los Angeles. Bishop Clement W. Fugh and Supervisor of Missions Alexia Fugh presented grants totaling $68,000 to organizations that focus on homelessness and children’s needs. Homegoing Service Held for Deaconess Luerena Williams

Luerena Williams, a longtime member of the AME Church, passed away on May 20 at the age of 92. Her long life was highlighted by her 20 years of faithful service as a missionary at Brookins (now Brookins-Kirkland) Community AME Church and 21 years as a stewardess and deaconess at Second AME Church, both in Los Angeles. She also served many years as president of Second AME’s Golden Glory Senior Club. Her homegoing service was held May 26. The Rev. Fugh reappointed the majority of Los Angeles-area pastors to their churches at the close of the Southern California Annual Conference of the AME Church during the Closing Worship and Commissioning Service on Oct. 30. Connecting faith and quilting leads to beautiful results, spiritually and literally

To the average mind, a link between faith and quilting is hazy at best. But, the Rev. Judi Wortham-Sauls clearly sees a connection. “Just like God use us as ordinary people to do extraordinary things, we can take scraps of fabric and create beautiful pieces of art called quilts,” she said.
