The annual events helps to prevent dumping and promotes a cleaner and healthier neighborhood.
On Saturday, March 23, the 7th Annual Community Recycling/Clean Up returns offering the community a place to dispose of their waste in time for Spring.
This free event will take place on the service road outside the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper office at 3800 Crenshaw Blvd., off Crenshaw and Coliseum, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free paper shredding services only available from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The clean-up is a drive-thru only, allowing the community the opportunity to drop off items without leaving the comfort of their vehicles with the line starting at Coliseum Street and Bronson Ave.
Mothers In Action (MIA) along with community partners and sponsors that include Councilmember Heather Hutt’s Office (Council District 10), Los Angeles Sanitation, Public Works, the Los Angeles Sentinel, Taste of Soul, Copy City, ECWA (Empowerment Congress West Area), ARCHES, and Water Replenishment District are ecstatic to bring back the annual free e-waste recycling and paper shredding event.
“This is our first time getting the green light to resume the event following the abrupt cancellation of the event the week COVID shut down the world in March 2020,” said MIA President Tracy Mitchell. “This is a great time to start your spring cleaning in your house and garage.”
The event will allow the community to shred confidential/sensitive documents, provide information on identity theft, allow residents to responsibly get rid of old paint/solvents, old medication, gas, motor oil, tires (9 is the limit), aerosol cans, lubricants, syringes/sharps, fire extinguishers, pesticides, adhesives, electronics, propane tanks, lights and provide residents with information on bulky pickup and more.
Every year, hundreds of community members come to shred sensitive documents, recycle electronics, tires and responsibly dispose of hazardous materials. This annual event helps prevent dumping in the community having brought out thousands of community members over the years.
There are some materials that will not be accepted at the event such as: containers over 5 gallons in size, ammunition, explosives, asbestos, fireworks, furniture, radioactive material, business, commercial and construction waste. Please have papers loose in bags and ready to be shredded.
As the South Los Angeles area welcomes new restaurants, businesses, and more waste, it is becoming important for residents to keep the community clean. The importance of events like this can’t be understated as it ensures safe harbors, beaches, and drinking water. The trash and household waste that are irresponsibly disposed of, goes through the storm drains directly into beaches and drinking water which affects the entire ecosystem.
“We urge all residents to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Mitchell.
