Celebrating the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King captivated Southern California as individuals and organizations held a variety of events to observe the legendary leader’s birthday.
March for Justice – The Palm Springs Section 14 Survivors, Stonewall Democrats of the Desert, Brothers of the Desert, cross-cultural advocacy groups, intergenerational groups, and others united in a March for Justice on Jan. 15. L.A. Attorney Areva Martin was among the keynote speakers at the program.
According to organizers, the goal of the event was to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy and support the Section 14 Survivors in their quest for justice. Section 14 was a thriving community of predominantly African American and Latino residents when the city of Palm Springs demolished the homes to replace the area with commercial development. The survivors seek justice and restitution.
The event included a unity rally, a one-mile march from Frances Stevens Park to United Methodist Church of Palm Springs, and an interfaith service featuring a gospel music tribute.
The Freedom Festival, one of the area’s largest gatherings to honor MLK, took place in Leimert Park Village on Jan. 11. The daylong event was sponsored by Council President Pro Tem Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Councilman Curren Price, and Councilwoman Heather Hutt.
A variety of activities were available at the festival including food and music, live performances from local artists, inspirational speeches on non-violence and social justice, engaging arts and crafts for children, and a job fair to connect those seeking employment to city departments and local businesses.
