The President of the Los Angeles City Council is a position earned, not given.  On Friday, September 2, Council President Nury Martinez showed her off her political skills and navigated the complexities of the Los Angeles City Council as she delivered on her promise and her commitment to the residents of the 10th Council District by bringing home the votes required to give residents the “Voice and Vote” they had been lacking for more than 200 days.

Low-income Los Angeles City residents who have been financially impacted through the loss of their job or who have otherwise experienced income loss in their household due to the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to apply for a one-time $500 grant to help pay their utility bills, under a program championed by LA City Council President Nury Martinez, Chair of the Ad-Hoc COVID-19 Recovery and Neighborhood Investment Committee and approved by the City Council last week.

Needless to say, there was no way that the newly elected madam president could have foreseen all of the unprecedented events that would rock the city and the nation when she took on the historic position.

As we near the June 27 special runoff election, all eyes are on the Council District 6 race to fill the vacancy left open by disgraced former Councilmember Nury Martinez. For those following the contest, it has taken a nasty turn as candidate Imelda Padilla, Martinez’ former staffer, has begun distributing a racist mailer in an attempt to polarize the community and its leaders. Aimed at creating a negative perception, the piece from her campaign highlights the word “CRIME” under a photo of L.A. City Council President Pro Tempore Curren Price, who represents District 9 covering much of South Central.

Racism is alive and well in the San Fernando Valley, and we should all be concerned. How prevalent is it? All you have to do is go back to the audio recording leak last October that led to the resignation of then-LA City Council President Nury Martinez who represented parts of the Valley. Fast forward to today and voters will have the opportunity to stop the clock on racism in the region.

Community relations manager Imelda Padilla will face council aide Marisa Alcaraz in the June runoff to fill the Los Angeles City Council seat vacated by Nury Martinez.
Padilla leads the seven-candidate field with 3,421 votes, 25.69%, according to updated results released Friday, April 7, by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. Alcaraz was second with 2,812 votes, 21.12%, 297 votes ahead of homeless services manager Marco Santana.
