The women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Kappa Nu Sigma San Fernando Alumnae Chapter (KNS) was extremely active in the month of October. KNS kicked off the month by serving as host chapter of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Western Region Area I Meeting by hosting over 200 sorority members from around Southern California on Saturday, October 8, at the Port of Los Angeles Boys and Girls Club in San Pedro. The Area I Meeting allowed members to receive important updates and the focus for the new sorority year. The meeting was facilitated by the Western Region Director, Ms. Kenessa Marshall.
On Saturday, October 15, Kappa Nu Sigma hosted its annual Hattie McDaniel Breast Cancer Awareness Tea at the Tea Rose Garden in Pasadena to provide information about preventive measures and early detection against breast cancer, while also honoring survivors. This beautiful occasion joined together sorority members and friends, along with medical professionals, survivors, and sisters still in the fight that who provided empowering and invigorating stories and information. The day’s mantra of “You are not alone. I am here with you” and the signature “Healing Spirit” tea made for a soul-enriching day of sisterhood and service.
Kappa Nu Sigma continued the month by engaging in necessary dialogue with the Links of San Fernando Valley and other Divine Nine organizations, by offering a free screening and conversation of the documentary “Afraid of the Dark: Why Are People Afraid of Black Men” a film by Mya B. This event took place on October 20, at the Laemmle Theater Town Center 5 in Encino. The audience was led in a thoughtful and timely discussion that caused deep reflection on how to address ill prescribed perceptions of Black men and the Black community.
KNS rounded out the month on October 26, participating in Sigma Gamma Rho’s national Hattie McDaniel Breast Cancer Awareness social media campaign to honor the late Hattie McDaniel, a Sigma Gamma Rho member, who succumbed to breast cancer 64 years ago on October 26. Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win an Academy Award. And to honor her legacy, Sigma chapters from around the world posted reminders about prevention and early detection using the hashtags #sgrho #sigmagammarho #breastcancerawareness and #thinkpink.
