U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Jay Williams will join Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Academy Award winner Louis Gossett, Jr., Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44), and others in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Watts Riots in Los Angeles.
The daylong symposium is set for Saturday, August 15, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, 1731 E. 120th Street in Los Angeles. Williams will deliver the keynote address during the luncheon at 11:30 a.m.
Several community leaders and elected officials are expected to gather to review the 1965 revolt and the McCone Commission findings as well as discuss current issues affecting Watts. The agenda topics will cover social, economic, political conditions, education, health care and public safety conditions.
Williams plans to outline his agency’s commitment to economic development efforts in Watts and communities across the nation. As administrator of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), Williams directs the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the global economy.
Previously, Williams served as he executive director of the Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, deputy director for the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and mayor of Youngstown, Ohio.
