The Broadway musical still tells a story that you’ll want see and hear over and over again.
Dynamic. Entertaining. Engaging. Full of passion. Those are just some of the descriptions that describe the Gershwins Broadway musical, “Porgy and Bess,” which opened Tuesday, April 22 at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
Originally debuting in 1935 in New York, “Porgy and Bess” still stands the test of time with a compelling story, soul-stirring music and dramatic scenes. The play tells the story of Porgy, a cripple, who falls in love with a woman from the wrong side of the tracks, Bess. Their love changes both of them but also brings some storms with it in the form of Bess’ lover, Crown.
Nathaniel Stampley as Porgy and Alicia Hall Moran as Bess will have you rooting for their once-in-a-lifetime love affair. Alvin Crawford as Crown and Danielle Lee Greaves as Mariah bring powerful performances. Kingsley Leggs as Sporting Life will definitely give you life with clever quips and his ‘smooth-daddy’ stroll. The rest of the cast both captivates and stimulates with amazing vocals, songs and dance.
“Porgy and Bess” features some of the best music you’ll hear in a stage musical production. Many of the songs utilize spiritual and jazz-infused influences that bring a lingering depth to the story. The play also brings together some of the best vocals around. This play truly has some of the best talent the stage can offer.
A true tale of love and tragedy, “Porgy and Bess” takes you through an emotional rollercoaster— and you’ll enjoy every minute. I definitely recommend you take a visit to Catfish Row.
