This month, Prosperity Market–the mobile farmers market spotlighting Black farmers, food producers, chefs, and entrepreneurs in Los Angeles–hosts its annual Black Business Scavenger Hunt (August 1-25). Scavenger hunt participants embark on a journey across the city to discover local Black-owned shops, restaurants, and more.

In honor of Black Business Month (August), Prosperity Market founders Kara Still and Carmen Dianne created an interactive map with 100+ Black businesses across food, fashion, wellness, entertainment, and more, encouraging Angelenos to visit and support as many locations as possible in order to earn points and win prizes.

“We started Prosperity Market in 2020 when we learned that 41% of Black-owned businesses were forced to close during the pandemic, and four years later, many businesses are still struggling. Initiatives like the Scavenger Hunt that encourage people to discover and visit Black-owned businesses around Los Angeles are especially timely and important and really can make a difference,” says Dianne.

“Our mission is to fill in the gaps where we see Black-owned businesses lacking support, from consulting on branding and customer engagement to identifying funding opportunities, offering grant-writing assistance, and improving production capacity for retail products in our new commercial kitchen,” continues Still.

“We do a lot of behind-the-scenes work to help Black-owned businesses, but the Scavenger Hunt is a way to include the wider community and have some fun along the way.”

Participants can visit http://www.prosperitymarketla.com to view the map of participating businesses and text #BBSH24 to the number (323) 417-0465 to join the scavenger hunt, and earn points by texting the keyword for each business when they visit.

The participants with the most points collected by Sunday, August 25, will win special prizes to be revealed at Prosperity Market’s pop-up event on Sunday, September 1, hosted by Hilltop Coffee & Kitchen Slauson.

Prosperity Market will take over Hilltop’s parking lot and their new mobile trailer will make its public debut. Other neighborhood businesses will take part in the celebration by activating in their respective locations with music, promotions, and activities. The winners of the Black Business Scavenger Hunt will also be announced and prizes will be distributed during the event.
