“Through My Mother’s Eyes” is a coffee table book written by Melba T. Binion Sanders-Johnson with quotes from various African Americans ranging from 8-103 years old honoring what they see through their mother’s eyes and the significance every mother carries.
Sanders-Johnson will share more about “Through My Mother’s Eyes” at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at University of Southern California – University Park Campus. She will appear on Saturday, April 22, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, April 23, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The book, which contains dramatic images by renowned photographer Moses Mitchell, was born after Sanders-Johnson had an important conversation with her mother, which rang true around the author’s 60th birthday and in turn became a precious gift. As a result, Sanders-Johnson compiled the collection of photographs and citations in an effort to view life as her mother sees things as a way to understand her better.
For many years her mother said to her, “One day you will be able to see through grandma’s eyes.” During the process of seeing her mother in a different light, she realized many people had experienced the same thing. She started asking her friends, colleagues, and sisters about their relationships with their mothers and the book reveals their responses.
