There is no denying that during the worldwide lockdown due to COVID-19, there was a renewed appreciation for the creative people behind today’s television shows.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will be rewarding some of these shows, as well as their stars, and creators that kept the masses sane. Last week the father-daughter duo Ron Cephas Jones (“This is Us”) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (“Blindspotting”) unveiled the nominees for the 73rd Emmy Awards.
The host this year is Cedric the Entertainer who will emcee the live show, which will take place at the Microsoft Theater on Sept. 19. Due to the continued issue around COVID-19, there will be a limited audience, intimate and small, which will consist of all nominees and their guests.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will feature 26 different categories ranging from writing and acting to awards for different genres — drama, talk shows, comedies, among others. Only shows that were released between June 1, 2020, and May 31, 2021, were eligible for this year’s ceremony.
Front runners in the drama category include X’s “Pose,” Netflix’s “Bridgerton” and “The Crown,” NBC’s “This is Us,” Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and HBO’s “Lovecraft Country.”
For comedies, Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method,” HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant, ” and ABC’s “Black-ish.”
In the limited series category, industry insiders are buzzing about HBO’s “I May Destroy You,” Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” Amazon Prime’s “The Underground Railroad” and Disney+’s “WandaVision.”
Note, the Creative Arts Emmys, which typically place a week before the live broadcast Emmys ceremony.
