As of Monday, June 28, the L.A. County Department of Public Health confirmed 3 new deaths and 259 new cases of COVID-19. There were 238 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 with 17% of nearly 7,013,000 individuals testing positive with symptoms.
Public Health is asking everyone to be on guard as the Delta variant is circulating throughout Los Angeles County. Masks and vaccinations are staying at the forefront in the continued fight against COVID-19. Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health, is warning everyone to continue practicing safety guidelines with this highly contagious variant.
“While COVID-19 vaccine provides very effective protection preventing hospitalizations and deaths against the Delta variant, the strain is proving to be more transmissible and is expected to become more prevalent,” said Dr. Ferrer. “Mask wearing remains an effective tool for reducing transmission, especially indoors where the virus may be easily spread through inhalation of aerosols emitted by an infected person.”
The Delta Variant is a highly contagious variant of COVID-19 and Public Health is asking for everyone to wear their masks in indoor settings such as grocery or retail stores, theaters and entertainment centers, and workplaces regardless of vaccination status. This variant is gaining ground in infection rates compared to others as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports it makes up half of all variants sequenced in Los Angeles County.
Public Health stated the fully vaccinated are protected from Delta variant infections but those with only one dose of Pfizer or Moderna aren’t fully protected. They are also urging everyone to wear masks properly covering the nose and mouth and to make sure the mask fits snugly against the sides of the face and around the nose. Public health is also suggesting unvaccinated people who are around other unvaccinated or those who have an unknown status to wear a respirators in the workplace for additional protection.
Public Health identified 1,249,560 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 24,480 deaths. Cases across the Southland: Los Angeles County shows 1,184,625 cases, Long Beach with 53,607 cases and Pasadena with 11,328 cases.
According to race and ethnicity, COVID-19 statistics show: American Indian/Alaska Native with 2,013; Asian with 56,859; Black with 47,600; Hispanic/Latino with 634,882; Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander with 4,248; White with 131,327; those of other race and ethnicity with 99,101 and 208,595 under investigation.
