Kamala Harris is the first Black and Asian American Woman who is on the major party ticket. On Wednesday, August 19, Harris formally accepted her nomination for Vice President of the United States. She spoke of mindfulness, alignment, faith, and the fight this country needs to elevate to a new definition of equality and freedom.
Harris described her workings with Biden will be in unity for the greater good of the Country. She elaborated on the mindset needed for the progression of the United states. The nominated Vice President went through her earliest memories of civic responsibility that were instilled in her. She stated that her mother molded her to be the vessel that she is, “She taught us to be conscious and compassionate about the struggles of all people. To believe public service is a noble cause and the fight for justice is a shared responsibility.”
As a daughter of South Asian and Jamaican genetic makeup, Harris can identify the uprooting of many family dynamics during this pandemic. She elaborated on the principles instilled in her; Harris relished in the nourishment of her mother’s teachings.
Seeds of justice were planted in her, born at the Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, Harris bloomed with the determination and perseverance to become a lawyer, district attorney, and US senator. Longing to be the change she wanted to see, Harris wore her court room introduction like a pendant of honor and embodied the statement: Kamala Harris, For the People.
Nominated Vice President Harris dissected key elements needed to create a land of equity, she shared the experiences she had fighting in court. Fighting for the residents of working-class communities, fighting on behalf of victims of a failed system. Harris expressed that she could recognize the hunter and hunted, and she is well suited for the battle for the sovereignty of fairness.
Harris accepted the nomination, she stated, “I do so, committed to the values she taught me. To the Word that teaches me to walk by faith, and not by sight. And to a vision passed on through generations of Americans—one that Joe Biden shares. A vision of our nation as a Beloved Community—where all are welcome, no matter what we look like, where we come from, or who we love.”
She went on to explain that the country’s differences work as the fabric that weaves every American together; it calls for a universal perspective of the infinite worth of human life. Senator Harris stated, “It’s about us. People of all ages and colors and creeds who are, yes, taking to the streets, and persuading our family members, rallying our friends, organizing our neighbors, and getting out the vote.”
However, considering the current social climate stemming from Capitol Hill, Harris stated the Country feels distant. The nominated vice president used the disproportionate severity levels among communities of color to paint a vivid picture; clarifying the methods established by the presently elected are not working.
Harris was very direct with entailing the failed leadership the Country is currently experiencing,” Donald Trump’s failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods. If you’re a parent struggling with your child’s remote learning, or you’re a teacher struggling on the other side of that screen, you know that what we’re doing right now isn’t working.”
Senator Harris disclosed the details of her alignment with Biden, she stated, “We must elect Joe Biden. I knew Joe as Vice President. I knew Joe on the campaign trail. But I first got to know Joe as the father of my friend.” Harris continued, “Joe and I believe that we can build that Beloved Community, one that is strong and decent, just and kind. One in which we all can see ourselves.”
The level of what is unknown has grown tremendously this year, the Country is heavily influenced with updates on a viral pandemic and must be able to adjust within days. Harris stressed her strong faith in the Biden Administration to be the best guide through this new terrain. She stated, “We believe that our country—all of us, will stand together for a better future. We already are.”
Feminine energy cascaded throughout Harris’ moment of acceptance, sharing the vision of so many that came before her. Women from Harris’ family virtually contributed their blessing of the nomination.
The road to recovery must start with acknowledgement of the pain. Harris detailed the injustices found in the Black Community; she is the torch that has been passed down through generations to finish the fight.
As the first woman of color nominated for vice president, Harris acknowledged the women that paved the way for her to accept the proposed position on Capitol Hill. She explained her sense of grit to march forward, be steadfast, and having a concrete mission for change came from the women who had to vote just to be heard. Those past advocates fought with an unwavering spirit. That energy is draped over her heart, Harris plans to be planted in that solidarity to be persistent until physical evidence of Justice.
She stated, “That I am here tonight is a testament to the dedication of generations before me. Women and men who believed so fiercely in the promise of equality, liberty, and justice for all. This week marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment. And we celebrate the women who fought for that right.” Harris found that she shared the same passion as those women.
This is a historic first, generations will refer to this moment as the steepest crack into the glass ceiling that all women face. The name Kamala Harris has been printed on the major party ballet ticket; it is the first of its kind. Senator Harris has cultivated her answer for evolution of human quality to be the vehicle navigated by the Biden Administration. There is a shared goal of moving forward with a new sense of purpose, healing generational wounds, and restoring the health of the nation.
