One of the top performers in the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross is 27-year-old pro supercross and motocross veteran Malcolm Stewart. Known as “Mookie” to fans and followers of supercross, he is excelling in a skillful 450 class.
He came in ninth at the season opener at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim on January 4, 2020 and looks to make a competitive showing in round two on Saturday, January 18 in Anaheim.
“You’re sitting on the gate in the 450 class and you look to your left and right and you see gnarly dudes,” Stewart said to Motorcross Action Magazine earlier this month. “You got at least 17-18 guys that have won a championship or at least have done something in the 450 class like top five or won a race whatever.”
Stewart, a native of Haines City, Florida overcame a broken femur that he sustained near the beginning of the 2019 season. He got back to training, doing long-distance bike rides and exercising, after recovering from having surgery on his femur.
Last May, SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/ MotoConcepts/Honda signed him for the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series with the expectation that he will be a highly competitive performer.
Stewart returned to the track in October 2019 for the Monster Energy Cup, a competition that consists of three main events. After coming in first in one event and finishing third in the other two, Stewart came in third place in the final standings of the Monster Energy Cup. He was two points away from first place winner Adam Cianciarulo.
Stewart came onto the pro scene in 2011, racing in the 250 class. In 2016, Stewart became the 250SX Eastern Regional Champion at the 2016 Monster Energy AMA Supercross in East Rutherford, New Jersey. That next year, he went to the 450 class; Stewart calls the 450 “the big boy class,” and noted how his transition from 250 to 450 was quick.
“I got my butt handed to me in 2017 … If you get pushed around, you’ll always be a punk in the class,” Stewart said in a profile with Monster Energy Supercross. “You got to show these boys that you ain’t here to play.”
