Frederick Douglass delivered the speech “The Meaning Of The Fourth Of July For The Negro,” on July 5, 1852 in Rochester, N.Y. at the Corinthian Hall, which was an event held by the Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

On this day, July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed while individuals of African descent remained enslaved.
