Taste of Soul (TOS) is right around the corner coming at you on Saturday, October 20, from 10am-7pm. The #1 family festival in Southern California is back—and so are the vendors! I don’t know about you, but I love baked sweets and that is just what Gwendolyn L. Currie is bringing to this year’s TOS with Ordinary People.
“I was thinking about how everyday people like delicious food items also, and how wonderful it would be if they could get it at an affordable price,” said Currie about the idea behind starting her business.
She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan but relocated to Los Angeles as a child, “so I am almost a native,” said Currie. She has worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years and decided to start her business in 2017.
Ordinary People offers an array of baked desserts such as lemon bars, chocolate chip/coconut and nut cookies, and pound cakes—ok, so where is her booth going to be set up at TOS? Sounds pretty good right? Well, on top of that, Currie prides her baking on using natural ingredients.
“I use only natural ingredients, so everything thing is freshly baked,” said Currie.
So… there’s always one item that stands out on a menu—something that gets everybody’s attention and has lines wrapped around the corner.
Currie has one of those items on her menu.
“I have been told on numerous occasions by women and men especially, that my lemon bars are the best that they have ever tasted,” said Currie. “That makes me know that I am on the right track.”
She plans to expand Ordinary People to doing bigger events and really wants to use her business to bring a little, delicious joy into people’s lives.
“My next step is to do small catering for events with 100 or less attendees,” said Currie. “Also, when this is my only job, I want to seek out people who are on a real tight budget and make their day special.
“I have been looking at and collecting special recipes for over a year now.”
This isn’t Currie’s first TOS as she participated in the festival almost four years ago. She looks forward to once again meeting the community and sharing her baked treats with everyone.
“I am looking forward to interacting with the people,” said Currie. “I believe that this is something I was created to do.
“It is amazing how everything is falling into place in the preparation for the Taste of Soul. When it seems that I have run into a stumbling block, God shows me a way to go over it!”
Be sure to look for Ordinary People at this year’s Taste of Soul on October 20 on Crenshaw Blvd, between Stocker St. and Rodeo Rd.

“I want them to feel the love that went into the preparation of every item that they will taste.
“I want them to know that I think that they are all special and it will be evident in the presentation of the products.
“We are Ordinary People, but that does not stop us from wanting extraordinary things!”
